The Rise of ChatGPT and Other AI Tools

Curious about all the hype? Learn what ChatGPT is, see a few examples, and get a list of 26 other AI tools you might find helpful.

The groundswell of chatter around ChatGPT and other AI platforms is hard to ignore. If you’ve had a chance to play with it, you know why… it’s impressive.

ChatGPT is an artificial intelligence (AI) chatbot that was developed by US-based research company OpenAI, and since November of 2022, over 100 million people have started using it. The majority of users appear to be testing with basic questions and prompts such as, “write a poem”, and “create an exercise program”, to see what it can do. Others have taken it to incredible heights like using it as a programming assistant, getting specific instructions on how to build a car, and creating landing pages for marketing campaigns.

  • ChatGPT is completely free to use during its research preview.

  • ChatGPT Plus has been recently launched at a pilot subscription price of $20. It is invite-only, provides faster responses, and promises access even during peak times.

Unlike traditional chatbots, ChatGPT can produce written text and converse with users in natural, conversational language. Frankly speaking, it’s scary good given a thoughtful prompt or even dumping a pile of misspelled words at it. If you’re curious about how the technology works, ask ChatGPT. What’s insane to think about is ChatGPT is pulling information from offline sources – it’s not connected to the internet. (Mind blown)

Tech investors have poured billions of dollars into funding for ChatGPT, and it has been well-received by the public, with many large companies exploring its potential. Their current valuation is at $30B and appears to be growing by the minute. IPO?

AI/machine learning (ML) and chatbot technology is not new, so why is there so much hype around this iteration in particular? This is because ChatGPT generates real-time responses that are based on your input. For example, you can tell it to take on a certain tone or voice. In this case, Joe Rogan telling a joke.

The same prompt, but with the voice of Mother Theresa

Here’s a link to a ton of basic examples where ChatGPT was used to help with marketing tasks.

Tread Lightly

While impressive, OpenAI does warn that the tool can generate occasionally “incorrect or misleading information,” despite the incredible math it may use, meaning you still must check everything. Since the data stops in 2021, be especially careful trusting specific facts or details ChatGPT writes after that.

The AI Battles Have Begun

Microsoft sunk billions into ChatGPT and has recently announced its new Edge Browser saying it’s using conversational AI to create a new way to browse the web. Users will be able to chat to Bing like ChatGPT, asking questions and receiving answers in natural language. It’s live but there is a waiting list.

A few days before Microsoft’s big announcement, Google introduced Bard in their attempt to catch up with ChatGPT. Google said it would begin testing its new chatbot with a small, private group on Monday before releasing it to the public in the coming weeks. In a blog post, Sundar Pichai, Google’s chief executive, also said that the company’s search engine would soon have artificial intelligence features that offered summaries of complex information.
