Only 10% of B2B Companies Hit Goals

“90% of executives interviewed say their companies regularly don’t hit corporate goals.”

Head back to 1995 for second. Do you remember the cartoon series Pinky and The Brain? It featured two mice - one, a genius, the other, an idiot. Every show and everything they did was aimed at taking over the world. The opposing characteristics created a classic recipe for shallow laughs and the occasional stimulating thought bubble - I loved that show! If you were a fan, you might recall that each show started with:

Pinky: Gee, Brain. What are we going to do tonight?

The Brain: The same thing we do every night, Pinky. Try to take over the world.

This reminds me of how so many annual planning meetings go with B2B companies…

Company: Gee, Leadership. What do you want to do this year?

Leadership: The same thing we do every year, team. Try to take over the world.

In the show, the two mice spend 20 minutes creating and trying to execute diabolical plans that should, in theory, help them achieve their plan of taking over the world. 66 episodes later and sadly, they never achieved their goals. How many episodes is your business on of not taking over the world, aka, accomplishing your goals? By the way, are you actually still trying to take over the world? If so, you’re not alone:

Ok, so 92% of individuals surveyed don’t hit their personal goals and 90% of executives interviewed say their companies regularly don’t hit corporate goals. With those numbers it’s easier to understand why only 20% of companies started in 2019 are still around today. Are there other factors that lead to a company’s demise, sure, but I’m willing to bet if they had a plan and acted on it, they’d be here for another year.

Personal plans and goals aren’t that much different than corporate ones so it’s not a surprise when we see personal and corporate goals with similar stats. So why is is so damn hard to stick to a plan and achieve goals?

A few common reasons B2B companies miss goals:

  • Lack of clarity as to what they want to achieve

  • Poor planning and execution

  • Resource alloaction

  • Lack of focus

  • Lack of accountability

Every single episode of Pinky and the Brain ends up the same. Great plans that fail to get across the finish line.

If you’re part of the 90% of B2B companies struggling to nail your goals, consider partnering with an accountability coach or B2B strategy team to help those plans come to fruition.
